General Information
Registration may be completed by mail or in person at the Board of Education Offices, located at 348 South Cassingham Road on the second floor of Bexley High School. A completed form and full payment are required at the time of registration. Checks should be made payable to "Bexley City School District," except for those programs that indicate otherwise.
Registration deadline is May 3, 2010. After this date, students may be placed on a waiting list, pending the schools’ ability to recruit staff. Enrollment in all classes is limited and registrations are accepted in the order received.
Grade level for each course is based on the grade a student will enter in fall 2010. Whether a course is developmentally appropriate for a student is at the discretion of Summer School Director, Harley Williams.
Length of session depends upon the course offering; please see course listings for specific dates. Summer Academy runs from Monday, June 21 through Friday, July 30, with some classes offered before or after these dates. There are no classes on Monday, July 5, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.
Location of classes is Bexley Middle School, 300 South Cassingham Road, unless otherwise noted. Camp Invention will be held at Maryland Elementary, 2754 Maryland Avenue. See the map included in this brochure for classroom numbers.
Fees for each course are included in the course descriptions, with fees for field trips included in the Physical Education class cost. Non-residents – those living outside the City of Bexley -- will pay 50% above the listed fees unless otherwise indicated. Registrants will be notified if a class is cancelled or full, with all payments refunded. A student who registers but withdraws prior to the beginning of summer school will receive a complete refund. If after registering a Summer Academy student passes the course during school year 2009 – 2010, s/he must present a grade card to receive a full refund. Financial assistance is available only for students who were enrolled in Bexley City Schools during the 2009 – 2010 school year and received free/reduced lunch. Families meeting the criteria should register by contacting Summer School Director, Harley Williams at 237-4277, extension 3132.
Class attendance is an important component of summer school success. Because class time is compressed into fewer individual days, Summer Academy will follow these rules:
1. Students late to school less than thirty minutes are marked tardy. Three such tardies equal one absence.
2. Students late to school more than thirty minutes are marked with a half-day absence
3. Students will be dismissed from a credit course with no credit or reimbursement if
absent more than 3 days from any full credit course
absent more than 1.5 days from a half-credit course
absent more than 1 day from Physical Education (half-credit course)
School Regulations
1. Proper effort and behavior:
a. Because the summer session is short, students must complete assignments quickly. b. Any student whose conduct is not satisfactory will be dismissed from summer school. All established rules during the regular school year are in effect. The first violation of these regulations will be grounds for dismissal. c. Any student who has a failing average in a credit course at the end of the interim (usually three weeks) will be placed on probation. If the average is still failing at the end of four weeks, the student may elect to drop the course.
2. Dress:
Although informal attire is permissible during the summer months, standards of good taste will be maintained. Shirts and shoes must be worn. Students who violate these standards will be sent home, with absences noted on their records.
Credit
High School students will receive full credit for summer school work as indicated. Summer Academy grades become part of the student’s permanent record and are included in grade point average computation.
Refund Policy
Full refunds will be made for classes that are cancelled or closed; or if the student passed the course during the regular school year. Registrants must provide grade card at time of refund request.
