Bexley City Schools Summer Academy 2010

Bexley Schools offers fun and enrichment this summer through a Summer Academy. Our courses encourage innovation, independent initiative, leadership, and creativity. From "boost" courses in reading and math to summer sports camps, families will find plenty of ways to build a summer of fun and learning.

The Arts

A. Experience Clay
Young artists create sculptures and vessels from clay, learning skills in hand building and working with clay and glazes.

C. Painting Workshop

D. Art Around the World III - Still Traveling
We are exploring yet more new places on our journey in search of great art! Pack your bags and grab your passport as we continue to travel across the globe with tour guides Lisa Viney, Maryland Elementary art specialist and local artist Michelle Stitzlein (check out her work at www.artgrange.com). Students will explore a variety of materials and processes as they create projects inspired by diverse cultures around the world. Also included is an eco-friendly project made from recyclables (look at the bottle cap art on Michelle's website) as we reduce and reuse to contribute to a "greener" planet. E. Bexley Beginning Band
This workshop helps students develop technique and musicianship, with all performing in small group ensembles, large group band, and music theory classes. Instrumental music students benefit from beginning their studies in a concentrated way. No playing experience is required. Students must furnish their own instruments; those who qualify can use school owned instruments at no cost. For more info, contact Mr. Johnson at 231-4591.

H. K.I.D.S. - Kindergarten and First Intervention Design for Success
This program will focus on increasing the language skills that are a prerequisite to children's success in reading. The summer sessions will extend the learning experiences of kindergarten and first grade students who have been identified as at-risk for reading success.

Students will increase language abilities that provide the foundation for reading acquisition through the following activities:
• developing phonological awareness
• building new vocabulary and concepts
• increasing curiosity about print in their environment
• reading books, poems, nursery rhymes, etc.
• re-enacting stories to develop sequencing and retelling skills
• using music, games, movement activities, and computers to practice skills

I. Adventures in Writing
Dr. John Becker, Thurber House instructor, freelance writer and wildlife conservation educator, will lead writing workshops for children aged kindergarten through sixth grade. A former elementary school teacher, Dr. Becker combines literary artistry with his experience at the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds to help students discover the enjoyment of nonfiction writing.  Participants will improve their skills, imagination and desire to write.

J. Reading Enrichment
Students read a variety of books, which serve as starting points for many different and creative activities such as rewriting and acting out stories, and developing and illustrating books. Individualized instruction cultivates confidence by increasing reading comprehension, rate and vocabulary. Students review and strengthen writing skills by keeping personal journals and by participating in various creative writing activities.

This course acquaints students with aspects of Bexley Middle School. This class will introduce students to various skills and organizational tools that will assist them with the management of their academic work. 109 Leadership Skills
This course is designed to assist today's teens in developing personal leadership skills. It focuses on three critical elements that promote personal leadership, healthy behaviors and job readiness skills: positive attitudes, interpersonal skills and goal-achievement skills. During the 8-week course, students will work on a personal achievement program, which includes building a personal action plan complete with goals and action steps to accomplish those goals. Positive outcomes of the course include: successful application of self-leadership skills, increase in performance, time management skills, conflict resolution, communication skills and goal achievement skills. In this two-week course, students will have an opportunity to outline, write and edit college applications essays and personal statements. Students will provide application essay topics (posed by the universities and colleges of their choice) and work individually with Bexley High School English teacher, Chad Hemmelgarn. The class will also address general essay topics, strategies for writing the essay, and a question/answer session with a major university Undergraduate Admissions Associate Director, as well as proofreading and editing assistance. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio for future reference of their answers to commonly asked essay topics. Class is limited to 15 students.

This class will focus on the expository writing process by helping students learn to organize their ideas and structure them in a coherent essay. The class will include a review of the basic parts of speech: action verbs, prepositional phrases, passive voice, and subject-verb agreement. Editing sentences and practicing the proper use of semi-colons, commas and apostrophes will also be covered. 203 Creative Thinking
BHS Gifted Intervention Specialist and glass artist Denise Novak will teach this course to help students discover their "hidden genius." Do you wonder how to think with your whole brain? Does the interconnectedness of life fascinate you? If so, then this course is for you! 206 Social Studies Ohio Graduation Test Readiness Class/World Studies Repeat
This course is designed to cover content on the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) related to World Studies. It is for students who were enrolled in World Studies at BHS during the 2009 -2010 school year who may need additional preparation for the social studies portion of the OGT, which is a requirement for graduation. Students who did not successfully complete World Studies during the 2009 - 2010 school year will receive credit for that course if they pass this summer school course. Prerequisite: Took but did not pass World Studies.

207 Government and Economics
This is a survey course relating to a variety of reading and discussion topics on the theory and function of government and economic systems in the United States. The responsibilities of the three branches of government at the federal, state, and local levels will be examined. Public participation, political parties, elections, policy agenda, supply and demand, production possibilities and other items will be covered. In addition, both micro and macro economic systems will be studied. A variety of teaching techniques will be implemented in order to compare and contrast economic and political systems, possibly including classroom simulations may be used.

208 Case Studies in History: Strategy and Diplomacy
Could World War I have been avoided? What would have happened had Britain and France not appeased Hitler in 1938? These and many other questions will be answered by students in this class taught by BHS social studies teacher, Mike Featherstone. This course presents a series of interactive historical case studies in which students will determine the course of European and world history. Assuming the roles of leaders and presented with critical decisions and historically accurate dilemmas, students will negotiate, cooperate, and even betray each other in order to succeed. Ultimately, they will need to craft balanced strategies, be ruthless where appropriate, and forge coalitions in order to prevail. The class will provide an overview of several eras and specific events; students will analyze primary documents and ultimately take the role of historic protagonists in strategic simulations. It will utilize primary sources, secondary readings and strategy games such as "Diplomacy,' "Origins of Word War II," ""Struggle of Empires," and "Here I Stand." Students will be assessed based on class participation and in-class journals. Students will: • develop negotiating and diplomatic skills • learn the historical background and complex dynamics involved in Reformation era wars and conflicts; imperial conflicts in 17th century Europe; lead-up to WWI and WWII • analyze how individual negotiations and decisions can change the course of history • think strategically and attempt to sway the course of events to their advantage

209 Cold War: A Simulation
This class is designed to allow students to experience the Cold War from multiple perspectives through a course-long, hands-on interactive simulation led by BHS social studies teacher Mike Featherstone. Students will assume the roles of the major participants from the Cold War, research the historical background of their subjects, and react to the events of 1945-1989 accordingly. Students will gain a deep understanding of the causes, course, and consequences of one of the most interesting periods in history. Events or concepts to be simulated include the post-WWII division of Europe, Korean War, Berlin Airlift, Berlin Wall construction, Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam War, nuclear arms race, Space Race, and ongoing espionage.

210 Health
This course is designed to meet the needs and interests of the students and is taught from the point of view of student problems.
